President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping is on a State visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Chinese President is accompanied by First Lady Peng Liyuan and a high level official delegation.

This is the first visit by a Head of State of China to Sri Lanka in 28 years. President Rajapaksa paid a landmark State visit to China in May 2013 during which both leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relations to a ‘Strategic Cooperation Partnership’, by substantially expanding the mandate for engagement.He said that the finalized agreement over the construction of Colombo Port City was also signed by the two sides and China Harbour Company Limited is investing over US$ 1.4 billion for this project under its first phase. President Rajapaksa and President Xi will visit the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) to launch the construction of the Colombo Port City today.China and Sri Lanka signed a number of agreements forging closer cooperation in the political, economical, cultural and social arenas. President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an exclusive interview with Xinhua recently hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s initiative of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Route, saying the economic corridor bears significance to Sri Lanka’s development.  - Sourc Daily News
