Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is the second largest kingdom on the island. Today, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best-planned archaeological relic sites in the country, a standing testament to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom’s early rulers. Polonnaruwa is also known as one of the cleanest and most beautiful cities in the country. The green surroundings are home to amazing ancient constructions such as Parakrama Samudraya (a huge lake built in 1200 BC) and, above all, friendly and hospitable people. Scientific observation has been made about its climatic changes. It has been observed that the temperature of the last part of the year drops significantly. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
